We accept what we think we deserve

I watched Perks of being a wallflower yesterday. (I know I’m late to the party)

But in that movie, Charlie asks Mr. Anderson, his English teacher, “Why do nice people choose the wrong people to date?”

He replies,

We accept the love we think we deserve

Made me think long, that quote. I think this ties back to self-worth and it can be seen applied in other areas of life too, including work.

If we think we deserve to be in a certain kind of role and be treated a certain way, we refuse anything less than that. But it is when our own perceptions of what we deserve are set so low that we give in to whatever we’ve been handed and even convince ourselves that this is the best we can get.

Later, Charlie asks Mr. Anderson, “Can we make them know that they deserve more?”

And he replies, “We can try”

Leaving it at that.
